Queen Elizabeth sincerely believed she served and answered to a sovereign greater than herself. Her life exposes the myth that “I can be my own boss”. We all answer to God, no matter how exalted our human position.
From the time of her coronation as Queen of England until the end of her life, she often spoke about her Christian faith. You’ll be blessed by her quotes.
In her first Christmas Address in 1952, the young queen publicly requested prayer for her upcoming coronation:
“I want to ask you all, whatever your religion may be, to pray for me on that day,” she said, “to pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.”
At the outset of her reign, she consistently referred to the Scriptures, and she was very vocal about her reliance on Christ’s teachings. Below are a few of her quotes:
“To what greater inspiration and counsel can we turn than to the imperishable truth to be found in this treasure house, the Bible?”
“For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life.”
In 2016 she shared, “Billions of people now follow Christ’s teaching and find in him the guiding light for their lives. I am one of them because Christ’s example helps me see the value in doing small things with great love, whoever does them and whatever they themselves believe.”
In 2000 she said, “I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ’s words and example.”
Even in very painful times, when she endured the deaths of her sister and her mother, she declared her strength and guidance came from her faith in God.
“I know just how much I rely on my own faith to guide me through the good times and the bad…Each day is a new beginning. I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God.”
Whatever role or position we hold in this life, may we always devote ourselves to serve and bow to Him, “He who is the blessed and only Sovereign King of kings and Lord of lords.” 1 Timothy 6:15 (NASB)
